District 42 Health Representative

Shannon Redmond

As the new year comes in with a roar and February is already here, I wanted to take this grand opportunity to introduce myself as your new health representative for our BC chapter of RTO/ ETO health plans.

My name is Shannon Redmond and I have resided in Ladner BC for over twenty years. I am married to Kevin and we have a yellow laborador retriever from BC Guide Dog Services named Lauren.   My husband and I have volunteered with BC Guide Dog Services for over twenty years and have been a dog foster family for many training seeing eye and autism support dogs.   Lauren was a career change dog which is a more tactful way of saying she flunked out of Guide Dog school.

I retired three years ago from Nursing as a Registered nurse.  I am home grown in Vancouver BC and attended Langara College to achieve my RN, University of Alberta for my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) and later in life, acquired my Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) at UBC.

I started my career in the medical surgical field, spent six years in Obstetrics working in the delivery room at both Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton and back home in BC at Richmond General Hospital.   I then transitioned into Public health nursing serving the wonderful families of Ladner and Tsawwassen including Tsawwassen First Nation for over 22 years.  My specialties were immunization, communicable diseases, new mom and baby visits and school nursing.

For my last ten years of my career, I was fortunate to work at the Nursing School at Langara College teaching Public health nursing and in the position of Assistant Chair for our Nursing Simulation Centre and nursing student services.

Public health was and still is my passion.   My transition from working in a hospital (acute care) to community health (preventive health) was more suited to my philosophy of health.  We all need to prevent health issues before they start. Everyone needs accurate health information so they can make solid decisions to stay well.
Preventative health is a key component as we age.  This is why I am excited to take on the role as your health representative for BC Chapter RTO/ETO.

My goal in this role is to regularly provide preventative health information which will hopefully be useful to you.  Through our local newsletter and via email updates, I would like to share pertinent information on health and wellness as well as provide updates on changes to our health plans.

I also sit on a Langara Retirees committee. Through that committee, we have membership with an organization called COSCO. (Council of Senior Citizens Organization). This organization provides free workshops for seniors.    http://coscoworkshops.org/
The topics include improving your memory, safe medication management and other pertinent health issues to seniors.   I will let you know of the dates of interesting speakers.  You can also check out their website too.

As an RN in the field of public health and nursing education for over thirty-five years, I feel honoured to be asked to fill this role as health representative.   Please let me know how I can help you in interpreting our RTO/ETO health plans as well as navigate our health care system.   See below for my contact information.
